Homecoming season: Alex Gustafsson returns to NXT Gen Cup

Alex Gustafsson

NXT Gen Cup welcomes back one of its original drivers from the series’ inaugural year in 2023. Alex Gustafsson enters the 2025 season with high expectations of fighting at the top of the field.

Nicknamed "Mr Consistent" in the paddock for his steady performances, the 18-year-old Swede last competed full-time in the NXT Gen Cup in 2023, finishing eighth overall in the championship. In 2024, Gustafsson participated in the season opener at Norisring before shifting his focus to single-seaters in the Aquila Formula 1000 championship. Now, with even more experience under his belt, he’s ready to get back behind the wheel of an all-electric touring car.

“I felt I had more to accomplish in NXT Gen Cup. I had strong pace throughout my first season, but I haven’t made it onto the podium yet—though I came very close. I’m aiming high this year, but I also need to stay realistic. The grid is incredibly competitive, with a lot of top drivers coming in,” said Gustafsson.

Despite sitting out most of last year, Gustafsson enters the 2025 NXT Gen Cup season with valuable track knowledge—having already raced on the majority of circuits featured on this year’s calendar.

“Alex is a driver with high potential,” said NXT Gen Cup founder Fredrik Lestrup. “Having started his racing career in Crosscar has given him a natural instinct for finding the limit of a race car. He’s determined, quick to learn, and knows how to translate feedback into performance on track. We’re excited to see what he can achieve this season.”

NXT Gen Cup, the world’s first electric junior touring car series, will once again race alongside DTM—Europe’s premier and best-known racing series—over four race weekends from April to August.

About NXT Gen Cup
The NXT Gen Cup is the world’s first 100% electric junior touring car cup where young female and male drivers race the LRT NXT1, a fully electric race car based on the MINI Cooper SE road car - engineered and built by Lestrup Racing Team. The series races together with DTM and is organised through an “arrive and drive” concept, enabling the junior drivers to focus on driving and creating the foundation for a professional racing career.

About DTM
DTM is Europe’s premier and best-known racing series and celebrated its 40th birthday in 2024. As one of the most competitive racing series, DTM features seven prestigious brands in its anniversary season. The DTM has a German core, but a strong international fan base. Races are broadcasted live in 150 territories. The series is also a leader in sustainable motorsport. For the second season, all cars are powered by a sustainable fuel made of 50% renewable components. Not only the cars racing in DTM are in the centre of sustainable projects. For the events itself the ADAC as promoter of the DTM offers innovations like an initiative to reduce plastic waste and a digital carpool solution, which has been recognised and awarded by the FIA.
